Welcome To The Northwest YMCA Neptunes Swim Team

Welcome to Competitive Swimming at the Northwest YMCA. Swim Team is for the advanced youth swimmer who has achieved the flying fish level in the YMCA youth swim lessons. We are a competitive swim team that focuses on teaching the technique and skills necessary for competition.

We compete in swim meets in and around the Wichita metro area. We strive to foster an environment that integrates teamwork and the YMCA’s four core values of caring, responsibility, respect and honesty.

The swim team is comprised of novice swimmers and very competitive swimmers. Each group has a specific training regime that is dedicated to improving the swimmers' ability. Physical conditioning, sound technique, mental strength and fun are the desired outcomes of our program.

Thank you for your interest and participation in the team. We are looking forward to getting to know you and your family better and helping you to either get started in competitive swimming or raise your swimming to a higher level at the Greater Wichita YMCA.

We feel that our team offers you more than any team in the community. We are committed to ensuring that our program fits your needs whether you are just getting started or aspiring to compete at the highest level in this sport.

About the Coaches:

The Northwest YMCA Neptunes boast one of the most qualified coaching staff in the entire metropolitan area.

Candace Pearson: Head Coach

Candace joined the Neptunes staff after most recently coaching at the Masters level.

As a swimmer, she began her training with the City of Plano Swim Team, a program known for producing multiple Olympic Trials qualifiers and for having a coaching staff experienced in coaching world class athletes. Candace was a Texas Age Group champion, qualified for Junior Nationals by age 12, was a Junior National Long Course Champion, a Senior National qualifier and an Olympic Trials qualifier.

In college Candace was a four-year varsity letter winner as a scholarship athlete at Arizona State University, where she was also Captain of the swim team and an Academic All-America. Candace holds a BA in Exercise Science and Sports Studies from Arizona State.

Hussein Yassine: Assistant Coach
Hussein comes to the Neptunes from the high school coaching ranks, where he is currently the Head Coach for both the Boys and Girls swim teams at Maize High School. He was nominated as the Coach of the Year by the Kansas State High School Activities Association for the 2009-2010 season.

In addition to his high school and club level age group coaching experience, Hussein was an outstanding swimmer himself, having been a Zone champion and both a Sectionals and Junior National qualifier. He was also a member of his former club's National Team.

Hussein is currently attending Wichita State University, majoring in finance.

Practice/Training Groups
Practice is scheduled according to swimmer's levels. It is the swimmer's responsibility to attend practices regularly and be on time. Swimmers should arrive on deck a few minutes before practice time starts for stretching and preparation. Parents are welcome to observe practices from the designated observation areas. To ensure quality time with all swimmers, parents are not allowed on the pool deck during practices. Questions and concerns can be directed to the coaches before or after practice. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

There are five training groups to accommodate all of our athletes’ ages, abilities and varying levels of interest:

Level I: $45/month (Y members), $70/month (non-members)
Fall - Spring: Tue/Thu: 5:20—6:30 PM

Summer: Tue/Thu: 4:20
5:30 PM
This group is for swimmers who are new to the sport, except in terms of their stroke progressions and competitive swimming experience. This group introduces the four competitive strokes, as well as starts and turns. Coaches create a fun environment that builds self-esteem and endurance, while preparing participants for their first competition. Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards each of Front and Back Crawl and Breaststroke and 15 yards of Butterfly.

Level II: $55/month (Y members), $80/month (non-members)
Fall - Spring: Mon/Tue/Thu 5:20—6:30 PM & Fri (opt.): 5:20—7:00 PM

Summer: Tue/Thu: 4:20—5:30 PM & Wed: 9:50—11:00 AM
This group is for swimmers with abilities ranging from novice to experienced swimming. Stroke development and fun are the main focus during the first half of the season, with a shift to longer training as the group’s progression dictates in the second half of the season. Two important goals in this group are; 1) increase aerobic ability and technique, while still having fun so that swimmers will be able to move to Level III, 2) Good practice habits are taught, along with constant improvement of stroke technique.

Level III: $65/month (Y members), $90/month (non-members)
Fall - Spring: Mon—Thur 6:20—8:00 PM & Fri 5:20
—7:00 PM
Summer: Mon/Wed/Fri: 7:50—10:00 AM & Tue/Thu: 5:20
—7:00 PM

This level is an excellent choice for serious competitive swimmers. They must have at least one “B” time from the USA Swimming National Age Group Motivational Times. At this level, swimmers are expected to start making more of a commitment to swimming or accept that the rate of improvement may be compromised. We encourage swimmers in this group to come 4-5 practices per week.

Level IV (Senior): $80/month (Y members), $105/month (non-members)
Fall - Spring: Mon—Thur 6:20—8:30 PM
& Fri 5:20—7:00 PM
Summer: Mon/Wed/Fri: 7:50—10:00 AM & Tue/Thu: 5:20
—7:30 PM

The Senior Group is a rigorous training group, and this is reflected in its training and its competition schedule. Swimmers will be invited to join this group based on their commitment to swimming and to the team. Five practice sessions are offered per week, as well as a fundamental strength training program. Coaches will strongly encourage swimmers to choose swimming over other activities and come to 5 practices a week.

National: Contact the Head Coach
Members of this group should have at least one Summer National YMCA cut and have made a strong commitment to the sport of swimming. Swimmers without a national cut may be invited to join this group based on their commitment to swimming and to the team. The commitment to swim meets will greatly increase with this group also, we will be going to swim meets several times a year. The coach will assume that swimming is the swimmers preferred sport and they choose swimming over all other activities.
