Swim Lessons

Swimming is great exercise, a challenging sport, effective therapy, a valuable life skill, and just plain fun. There’s nowhere better to learn than the Y, where we’ve been helping all ages to swim for more than 100 years. Our classes are about more than just teaching techniques, they’re about building confidence and nurturing potential, progressing with your needs and abilities, from introductory to competitive.

Be Water Wise

Progressive, monthly classes for ages 6 months through adult. Learn the basics, then build your skills and develop your technique. Private, partner and group lessons also available.

Why learn to swim?

  • Swimming develops all muscle groups evenly
  • Each year, over 8,000 people learn to swim at the Y
  • Drowning is the leading cause of death in children age 1 - 5 yrs
  • It may take 30-80 swim lessons to learn to swim independently
  • Skills will dwindle if swimmers practice only in the summer!

Register Online or at your local Y

  • Swim Academy (ages 6-18). A progressive performance-based program that cultivates more intensive swim skill development. Must master specific skill sets before initial enrollment or progression to the next level. Levels 1-3 available. Director approval required. Classes offered throughout the year. 45-minute classes twice a week. Available at Andover & Northwest YMCAs.
  • Swim Team (ages 6-18). Train year-round and compete in local, state, and national meets. As part of the USA Swimming and Missouri Valley Swimming Associations, swimmers train year-round on stroke development, swimming skills, and team building. Available at Andover & Northwest YMCAs.

Register at your local YMCA for swim academy, swim pre-team, or swim team.

Take your skills to the next level with our fitness-oriented Master’s Swim Club for ages 18 and up. 60-minute classes twice a week. Available at Andover YMCA.

Challenge yourself in our 100-mile swim club. Record your laps throughout the year and earn a t-shirt for achieving 100 miles. Available at all YMCAs. Free to Y members.
