DPP Was Meant to Be
A visit to my doctor in December 2015 for a blood pressure check and lab work ended with the nurse informing me that my A1C came back at 6.2. “You are in pre-diabetic range,” she said. I thanked her and said to myself, “I know what to do, I just have to do it.” When I went back in June 2016, my A1C was 6.1. I was already having the tingling, numbness and shooting pains in my feet and a lot of trouble sleeping. It was at this point I got worried because I do not want to be diabetic and I knew that I needed something to help myself be healthier as I age.
One night as I was browsing my computer, I decided to get some information about the Wichita YMCA (I thought I might try walking on the track). I found an article about the Y's Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)! It was scheduled to start in about a week!!
I made up my mind that this was meant to be so I signed up and started the class. There I was with people who understood how I feel, we all had similar stories and life struggles. None of us were too excited at first, knowing we needed to hold ourselves accountable. But with our wonderful facilitator bringing us new information and strategies every week, the lifestyle changes slowly started falling into place!
I always looked forward to our weekly sessions, even when I was really struggling with my choices because I knew there would be more information, education, and motivation given to all of us. We now have bi-weekly sessions and soon will be “weaned” down to monthly until our class is over.
I never would have thought I would be almost 40 pounds lighter just 22 weeks after starting the class. After last week’s doctor visit, I learned that my A1C is now 5.8! Best of all, I'm thinking about what I'm eating and trying to routinely make better food choices, as well as making a point to be more active. My ideal weight is still a ways off, but I have the tools and motivation needed to be successful. I believe that achieving my ideal weight will help to achieve a much better A1C level (hopefully out of pre-diabetic range). I'm so much happier now, people are actually starting to notice my weight loss, which is an added bonus!
