Dear YMCA,

My daughter’s father and I bought a house together at the end of 2008, and were beginning to build a family. It seemed like a dream come true until it wasn’t. In March, our family was torn apart by domestic violence. Everything in our life changed instantaneously. We went to a women’s shelter for safety, and I filed for divorce. Everything changed except the YMCA. I couldn’t tell my (then) 2-year-old daughter when (or if) daddy was coming home, or even when we would be going home. What I could tell her, just like every day before the incident, was we were going to the YMCA, and she was going to Kid Zone. The YMCA was more than our safe place, it was our at home place — the one thing we had left that made us feel like life was ok and would be ok again. For this refuge we are thankful.
